Detecting your address
This is the address the internet sees for your connection, usually your router or your provider's gateway rather than your computer itself. If you are on a VPN it shows the VPN exit instead. Location comes from the provider's registration data and is approximate. Nothing on this page is stored.
What your public IP address is
Every device on your office or home network shares one public address that your internet provider assigns to the connection. Websites, Microsoft 365 and remote access systems see that address, not the private one your laptop uses internally. The location shown is where the provider registers the address, which is usually the right town but can be a neighbouring city.
Most home and small office connections have a dynamic address that can change when the router restarts. Business connections can have a static address that stays the same, which is what makes location-based security rules possible.
Why it matters for Microsoft 365 security
A static office address lets you build Conditional Access policies that treat the office as a trusted location: no MFA prompt every hour for people at their desks, but a prompt or a block for the same account signing in from somewhere unexpected. It also lets you restrict admin portals and remote access to the office and VPN only.
It cuts both ways. A static address is also a fixed target. If your firewall exposes remote desktop or an old VPN on that address, it will be found by automated scanners within hours. Knowing your address is the first step to checking what is listening on it.

Why does the location shown not match where I am?
Geolocation is based on where your provider registers the address block, not on GPS. Mobile networks and larger ISPs often show a regional hub rather than your actual town. It is accurate enough for country and usually for city, and no more.
Is my IP address personal data?
Under UK GDPR it can be, because it can identify a device or connection. This tool shows your address only to you, does not store it, and the lookup is not cached because the answer is different for every visitor.
Should my business have a static IP address?
If you use location-based Conditional Access, site-to-site VPNs, or need to whitelist your office with a supplier, yes. Most business broadband and all leased lines can include one for a small monthly charge.
Can someone find my home address from my IP?
Not from public data. Geolocation gives an approximate area, and the registry shows only your internet provider. Linking an address to a subscriber needs the providerās records, which they release only under legal process.
